World Cup fever took over, the fans took to the streets, the pubs ran out of Co2, Brexit is in a mess and the president of the US didn’t bow to the queen! It’s been quite an eventful few weeks!
England did quite well, Southgate; one of the most inspiring England managers in my lifetime! he got rid of the fear for the team and got them into the mindset that it was an adventure, I liked that… it inspired me to venture out into the streets of Preston, what did I see… flags! lots of flags! A display of English pride, a nation flying its flag! a flag that is in memory of a man whose mother came from Palestine, who was born in Turkey, our very own patron saint George, like Trump refused to bow to a head of state, but the dragon slayer met an unfortunate fate, he was beheaded!
To me flags have represented a nationalist ideal, a flag was often celebrated by the far right! now it’s starting to represent something else! To me; its a symbol of hope, a flag that represents the right to stand for what it is you believe in, a history lesson, it tells us our past is very much like our present; we’re a multicultural nation and in the words of the late Joe Cox;
“We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us”
